The Clipper
Staff Writer
March 2018 - June 20218
The Clipper is Everett Community College’s magazine publication. I was thrilled to serve the organization as a staff writer for one quarter, taking over the Within an Hour series, as well as publishing a few additional stores. My writing garnered two accomplishments as my story “See My Voice: a Deaf Perspective” generated the most page views of all stories during the 2017-2018 production year. Additionally, my piece, “Within an Hour: Kirkland” won the first place award for multimedia journalism in the 2019 PNAJE competition.
About the Clipper
About the Brand
Everett Community College’s humble student led, news and magazine organization! This publication is an entirely student-led organizaiton, under the leadership of Andy Wahl. Having served the student body since 1943, the publication has seen many different forms, continuing to adapt to the student body’s needs and interests.
My Role & Strategy
When inheriting the “Within an Hour” series, I sought to find a competitve edge that I could utilize. I added additional multi-media elements, highlighted towns that were increasingly accessible, found activities that fit all budgets, and appealed to a varity of tastes — it was by no means a one size fits all series. My additional pieces sough to highlight current events and student experiences. My piece on the experiences of Deaf students on a hearing campus provided a look at a community’s experience that had never before been brought to light.

See My Voice: A Deaf Perspective
In the front of the classroom, near the instructor and the board sits an interpreter, transforming the instructor’s lesson into sign language. This is the classroom experience for Everett Community College students like Kendra Omoth, 29, and Aspen Carbajal, 18, who are both Deaf.
Within an Hour: Kirkland
Summer is just around the corner, and Kirkland is less than an hour away. Filled with beautiful parks, sunny waterfront spots, and neat shops to stop in along the way, Kirkland is the perfect day trip.
Follow this trail of shops and stops for a guide to a day-trip through Kirkland.
Within an Hour: Lynnwood
Needing a little break from school but there isn’t much time or money to be spent? Check out the Lynnwood edition of With an Hour for some cool places close to campus to stop by and try.

Spring has sprung! Check out the newest Within an Hour featuring Mount Vernon, and a Washington favorite: the Tulip Festival, all in under an hour drive from campus.
Sex Week: The Female Orgasm
The big-O: everyone wants one. Concern stems from the one-sided education on orgasm. When it comes to sex, society tends to focus on the male orgasm. From the typical public school sex education, the porn industry, and the general public, it can be hard to get educated on the female orgasm. This year’s fourth annual #sexweek pushed the boundaries of social norms, presenting a seminar on the inner-workings of the female orgasms.
Within an Hour: Seattle
Seattle is a hotspot for travel. Tourists flock the coastal city in search of the typical Pacific Northwest experience. Yet still, hidden gems preside in Seattle, including free street parking on Sundays, which also happens to be when it is easiest to drive to in under an hour.
